The buttons can be programmed to work with the X-10 home automation system. The inexpensive components are sold under a variety of names the most common is the system sold by Radio Shack under the name Plug n' Power. There is a wireless remote control available which can be used with the home link system. With the available modules you can control most anything electrical in the house. The extra button on my Home Link is set to turn on all the exterior lights of the house.
