Idiot light for trunk open? S70 1998

Excuse my typos, rearward is not reward.

The latch pin in the top of the bumper, looks like an inverted "U", is held in place by barely visible T40 screws.

If the lid slams shut, you need new struts.

Do this: With the hatch open, take a phillips screwdriver and close the latch mechanism one click. Then push a little harder until it clicks again. That should turn the idiot light off. Try pulling on the latch with the screwdriver and see if the light comes on, it should not. The reason for the phillips is that it has a round barrel Vs a regular screwdriver which has 4 edges, and fits the latch nicely.

Removing the lock assembly is a pain and the plastic tabs that hold all of the metal rods tend to break, making the lock useless. Replacement is a last resort.

Because the hatch 'slams' shut (old struts), the pin on the bumper might have moved or someone bumped your bumper in a parking lot. Scribe the plate that meets the bumper before you attempt to move it. 1/8 inch is a LOT of movement, and only move it rearward. If you move it forward, you can easily break the lock internals because it latches too tight (plastic).
