Of course, if the block overheated and the driver continued to drive, there could be compromises in the aluminum block. You won't find out until the engine is fixed enough to run and antifreeze is pouring out of the cracks.

Most often, the red lights on the dash are enough to make the driver pull over and turn the key off, as well as seeing steam pour out of the bonnet.
