If your son drives in the NYC area verses up state snow belt, he will have very little need for 'snow' tires. Once the streets are plowed and salted, the roads are either wet or icy and usually just wet.
You need to verify the tire size, either 15 or 16, and the width/ratio of his current tires. The Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus does look pretty good as it handles well in the wet and is also quiet.
If you buy 4 tires, always check the date of manufacture on the sidewall before mounting. You don't want tires that have been on the shelf for a couple of years.
