This is an interesting post about CEM failures in 2004 "R" cars:

This was back in 2011 for USA cars. Check out the symptoms and compare it with your car.
In order to remove the CEM, here is a brief description from the last post:
"Had CEM issues in a '04 XC70. Had incorrect error message of brake failure, door unlocked, lights flash, engine in limp. Sent CEM to XeMODeX and all is well.
CEM is located above drivers left foot (left hand drive). Held in place with spring clip. Disconnect battery before starting CEM removal.
It is about 6" wide and 10" high with a bundle of wires attached at one short end. It can be lowered with wire bundle attached.
I numbered the relays and took a picture without disconnecting anything. Wire plug is held by one bolt. Wiggle plug using plyers on body of plug to remove.
Remove relays (small boxes plugged into board) and CEM slides out. Send to XeMODeX for analysis and rebuild. I don't work for XeMODeX, just a pleased customer. Cost about $600 and a few days turn around. Then use the picture and numbered relays to reinstall in original positions. Easy except for laying on back under steering wheel with both hands up behind dashboard.
Working very slowly and carefully due to all the wires, it took me ~ 2 hours to remove and document. Reinstall was 20 minutes. No issues or failures since January. "
