If the battery is unplugged or totally dead and the key is in the lock just enough to allow the steering wheel to be turned, the key can not come out. I assume the gear selector is in "N" allowing the car to be rolled and the key can only be removed when the selector is in "P".

Pulling the mechanical cable from the lock is a solution in your case. But, I don't think that the spring is a cause.
