Checking ATF In 2006 S40 S40-V40

Hello . I just bought a 2006 S40 24I . Checking all the fluids . Finally found ATF dipstick . In a really hard to get to spot. In any case do I check it cold ? Do I check it running ? Do I check it hot(say after driving 10" or so with temp needle at middle) and running ? Of course car level . If I have to add can I use Dextron or do I have to use Volvo ATF ? Thanks for your help & advice . - Frank
