Not wishing to state the blatantly obvious - but you did not mention turning the valve clockwise to close it.

The cap you mention is to keep gunk out of the valve- no way can it hold the brake fluid under pressure.

The bleed valve opens counterclockwise and is closed by turning it clockwise - the the cap is place on it.

Please pardon me if I missed something in your post-
