Can a 'check engine' light cost $3000? 850 1996

Curious, when the Check Engine light comes on, my mechanic pulls the codes and shows them to me on the display. O2 sensor, probable, and not an outrageous price. They usually need to be done every 100K mi. ECU...that's a pretty broad diagnostic. If the car runs well, I doubt it. The internal oil leak is strange. If an oil drip is visible, that's obvious. If it's leaking "internally" but not creating any smoke, where is it supposed to be going? Start with the O2 and you will probable stop there.
