I have Alex Peper's tool. It currently cannot reset the service light on my '98 V70. He claims he is working on the problem.

From reading this board, I am under the impression that Check Engine is mainly fuel system and emissions related codes, not ECU per se. To date, my CE codes have been "172 System Too Rich" which was not recognized by Rich Kelley at Bay 13, and "442 Evap Small Leak" which I have yet to investigate.

Keep in mind that Peper's tool is software plus a wire interface, so if you don't have a laptop, you'll need a very long extension cord and haul your desktop out to the car.
