Oil filters, Fram or Mann? 850 1996

If I am right, (of wich I am not sure), the first digit (like 5W) means how thick or thin the oil is at a given temp. The second (like 30) means something about how this oil thickness change with temp (high number-> little change.
Therefore I am driving 5W-50 at summer and 0W-40 at winter.
If somebody think I have mistaken, please tell me.
