battery light comes on after switching off the engine

Your owners manual explains what all the warning lamps mean. You are getting a message that the battery is showing signs of early failure and it's just a matter of time before it lets you down. I am assuming the battery is over three year old? If so, it's time to replace it. My Volvo battery is holding strong in it's fifth year, however when the warning lamp eventually comes on, I'll just go out and replace the battery...
