Steve the plugs description sounds like they are ok. You might check the plug wires for resistance and continuity. Also depends on the milage. Could be pre-ignition, but doesn't sound like it. In the '60's I worked for Champion in the engine developement labs. Our plugs met or exceeded the specs on most cars. Not to make excuses, but check the wires, and rotor cap, and timing. Oh one other thing, start and run the car at night, with no lights on, and open the hood, if it looks like the 4th. of July time to replace all the plug wires.
