Removing Paint Stripes 850 1996

Ask your friendly local body shop.

I think the routine procedure would involve wet sanding with something like 360 then 480 then 600 grit sandpaper. Stay away from sharp edges nearby.

Use a rubber block and LOTS of water, change paper if you see any contamination on the paper.

Wet generously, (some people put a little dish detergent in the water) sand a little, (you can even squeeze a sponge full of water slowly over your work when sanding)then wipe the surface off to check your progress. Scratches that are deeper than the rest indicate contamination.

Repeat...repeat...repeat...

Stop using the coarsest grit when the stripes are almost gone. After the stripes are removed, just sand until the scratches are gone from the last grit. After you get to 600, polish should do the rest.

You can use polish with plain paper instead of a rag if your progress is too slow. Special polishing rouges are available.

Don't go crazy with the sanding and polishing, wax will hide some of the dullness, if not you can always sand again. Remember, it will look better each time you wax the car down the road. You will take some of the paint off around the stripes - a lot if you are careless.
