Fast idle ? 850 1996

I would try cleaning out the idle control valve, as well as the throttle body and intake while you are at it, and if you have a turbo, the intercooler.

When I did this, my idle rpms went from about 950rpm to about 800rpm.

And if you have an auto, having such a high idle will create higher wear in areas such as the brakes, and the tranny, in particular the the torque convertor and ATF especially.

Just use a good intake/throttle body cleaner that is O2 sensor and catalytic convertor safe. I used two cans of Kleen-Flo's intake/throttle body cleaner, a tooth brush and a clean lint-free rag to do mine a while ago. It takes about an hour to do get everything REALLY clean.

When starting the car up right after cleaning, don't be surprised if you need to crank a little longer for the engine to catch, don't be surprised if black smoke comes out of the tail pipe, and don't be surprised if you have to give the engine a little gas while cranking or just after the engine catches, to keep the engine alive. And after such a thorough cleaning, it's a good idea to change your engine oil.
