I don't think the ECU itself will cause lower realiabiity - but well, er, the new found spirited driving will indeed cause faster wear and more opportunities for failure. It's the nature of the beast - higher RPM's and road speed, with required harder braking are just harder on the car.

If your #1 goal is to make your car last because turbo parts are dear, then save your money and skip the ECU upgrade.
