Juan,
Being a student myself, I can tell you that it is very important to buy a car that will not eat your pocket up when it comes to repairs/ maintenance. The best method to go would be Japanese. Toyota, Honda, have great low-maintenence engines. My sister just bought a brand new Nissan Sentra with a 100,000 mile warranty for the price of my 850. Granted she isn't the fastest off the line, or the most comfortable, or the safest, but she is saving $ in the long run.
When it comes to fuel economy, the 850 isn't that bad at all. It is actually impressive. I average 28+ mpg on the highway.
When it comes to repairs, the 850 hasn't caused me any problems whatsoever. The only costly aspect is the scheduled maintenance. I just paid about $600.00 for the belts to be changed, throttle body cleaned, new sparkies, etc. (This was the 60k+70K services combined, that's why it is so expensive, otherwise it would be about 150-200 bucks)
Besides that, it is just as reliable as an Accord, just a lot more comfortable, fast, and safe...
But this is only as true as the 850 you're thinking of buying. I think I got lucky with mine, but at 75k miles, now is crunch time. I've heard that now is when the bits and pieces start breaking... let's keep our fingers crossed.
