Brake groaning/slight grind 1991

Hello-
I just purchased a 1991 940 Sedan, and was told by the shop that the brakes were still 75% good. When I brake on a hill the car makes a deep groaning sound, and feels like it is grinding (not necessarily a metal on metal feel). Any ideas on what this might be?
