Brake groaning/slight grind 1991

Your car is telling you that you need a new shop ;)

Because you are a woman the people at the shop probably think that you will not understand a technical explaination. Sadly my daughters run into this all the time.

Probably your rotors are pretty well worn and grooved, but they are not worn enough to require replacement and you have enough brake pads to last at least until the next service or longer. Most owners probably would not change rotors and pads for a while longer. If you notice braking problems or lack confidence in your brakes, have them look again, or go to another garage and express your needs. I have had very good luck with brake service at my dealer - 250,000 miles on 6 used Volvos over 8 years - no squeaking ever. You will usually notice light grinding or pulsing in your brakes when your rotors approach the end of their life.

If you take a flashlight and look at your rotors you will probably see that their braking surface is grooved like a long playing record and there is a rusty ridge apound the outside. The rotor's thickness at the edge is the original thickness, and the grooved area represents their current thickness. DO NOT TOUCH THE ROTORS UNLESS THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR QUITE A WHILE - THEY ARE HOT!

BTW - If you have alloy wheels, you can probably see the rotors through the holes in the wheels, if not, you will have to crawl under the car. (You need to do this to earn your stripes.)

When you get anything changed on your car, have them save the parts for you. Take the old part - such as worn brake pads - to the parts department and ask them to show you a new part of the same kind, then you can see how the parts wear. Don't make a mess on their counter, that is considered bad manners.

For more information, this post should be on the RWD forum.
