Hmmmm...When the brakes were last worked on, were they properly bleeded(purged) of air? Air in the system would cause softness in the pedal and/or complete brake failure.

If it were me, I'd bleed the system thoroughly and replace with fresh brake fluid. When I did my 850 last year, I was surprised at how dirty the brake fluid was.
