I contacted my dealer when i had to replace my windshield. They actually out-source the job to a mobil shop--most dealers aren't experienced in windshield repair, so this is how they handle it. I chose to research the best shops (make sure they use Essex adhesive)and get quotes.
My lousy insurance wouldn't cover the full cost of "volvo" glass so i paid a little out-of-pocket. I had considered the aftermarket glass which I was told is the same, but later found that it wasn't. The windshield is a critical safety component and I wanted the best job the first time. Also, the shop i brought it to suggested that i have it done in-house, rather than by their mobil unit since i was working with more expensive glass and car.
Oh, I too had a chip that turned into a long crack along the windshield. Hope that helps.
