I own a 99 V70 with factory roof rails. Agree that there is a little added noise. On the plus side, I can mount my Thule cross bars anywhere on the car - not sure if you can do that with the Thule towers aft of the back doors. Either way, a wind deflector is a good idea otherwise above 45mph you will get a good howl. The howl lessens when you put gear on the rack.
Tires - I put Michelin X-one's on my V70 after the MXV4 wore out quicker than I wanted. The ride is quieter and the tires are warrantied to 65 or 80k (can't remember off the top of my head).
Tow hitch - watch the Volvo wiring. Don't know if the car is pre-wired (I have a factory hitch), but Volvo uses a screwy electrical setup.
Good luck.
