Query on timing belt/aux failure 850

I have an aquaintance with a 960 who had the same thing happen. The serpentine belt failed or something got caught in it. When it came apart, it somehow got between the timing belt and crank pulley, throwing that belt. New head was required.

There is a sheild for the t-belt but I don't know if it extends to the crank pulley.

Leads me to a question I have about the 850/960 which I'll post separately.
