The 10th digit of the VIN designates "model year", not build year. The build month and year is printed on the label usually found on the edge of the drivers door on 800 series Volvos. A car can be built in january of 92 but still be marketed as a 93, at least in the USA. Most manufacturers start the next model year in the summer/fall to get a jump on the model year.
