Power steering fluid- when to change? 850 1996

I read from Bay13 that you're suppose to change it only when it smells burnt. As for using ATF like the manual says, DON'T--it'll squeal when you make slow full turns. It should be Power Steering fluid as was replaced by my mechanic.
