The 2000 S40 is a great car. I like this one better then the new ones because of the layout on the inside and also the leather. If the one you are getting has leather, the leather used in the 2000 I think feels better then the new leather in the 2001/2002.

I have replaced the rear sway bar on my car with the upgraded IPD sway bar. I recommend this highly. It really adds a whole new dimension to the car.

As for problems. The break pads are definitely an issue. The wear down way too fast. Also the fact that the rotors CANNOT be turned is an issue so when your rotors get warped usually after about 45,000 miles you have to replace them. I also had the check engine light problem, which I am happy to say has been resolved with the update.

Other then that besides from a few squeaks that I need to take care of, my 2000 S40 has gone 67,000 (just turned that yesterday) with no major problems. (Knock on faux wood).

I realize georgina has had a lot of issues with her car and some other people have too, but you have to look at the fact that the people with the problems speak the loudest. People who don't have problems with their cars don't speak out too much.

Many S40's have been sold in the US and there have only been a few complaints. People are very happy for the most part.

My opinion is buy the car, but negotiate the price down a bit more. You can do it. Where used cars are concerned there is a whole bunch of wiggle room and Volvo tends to want to include the charge for the word "Certified." They say they don't include the charge in there, but I bet you can knock another $1,500 off that car (the price of the word "Certified").

Go for it and enjoy a fun peppy car :)

P.S. Don't be suprised if your speakers fail on you at some point. They really aren't high quality (even with the premium sound system). And don't get Volvo to replace them per your warrenty. Buy a nice pair of speakers from Crutchfield.com
