If what you're saying is true, the ONLY reason why that would happen is because someone previously had the ball joints off before (for whatever reason) and overtightened the bolt thus cracked those "ears". I know this because I've seen it before after another shop replaced ball joints. It's not a Volvo design flaw, it's a fault of the guy who overtightened that bolt.
