you know what you're getting into.....
Check out kino's website and the surveys at the lower RH corner, http://kinovolvo.velez.ws/ and also http://www.volvospeed.com/maintence.htm to see some of the common problems. Consumer Reports recommened my car when it was new, they now say avoid it as a used car. There is a thread below that states that the manufacture of many of the electrical controllers was actually subcontracted by Volvo to FIAT of all things. I have a 2 1/2 inch stack of receipts so far, mostly electrical stuff, suspension stuff, the upper motor mount, the "O" ring, etc. The AC evaporator is an almost universal failure item on 850s but strangely not on SV70s, at least yet, it should have been replaced on any 850 you consider, look to see that the plastic rings - an assembly line tool - are NOT on the evaporator pipes in the engine compartment which indicates it's been replaced. Also the 20 valve motor is an interference design, so it's critical that the timing belt is replaced every 70,000 miles (50,000 for '93s). Look for a silver sticker in the engine compartment.
Of course have it checked out by a good Volvo tech if yo're mechanically unsure.
The car's still a lot of fun to drive, today I nonchalantly smoked a bunch of teens in a musclecar at the stoplight, like I said the turbo wagon's a LOT of fun to drive, it fits and is comfy like an old pair of jeans.
