Ordering before you've driven one is a leap of faith! Glad it worked out for you.
There's certainly more rear legroom in the XC70 (+2.3" compared to the 5-passenger XC90 and a whopping +4.1" compared to the 7-passenger) but less hiproom (-1.2"), less shoulder room (-1.9") and less headroom (-0.4"). Volvo worked hard to fit in those 3rd-row seats.
You can definitely feel the extra bulk of the XC90 although the gas mileage is nearly the same with the 2.5T if we are to believe the fuel economy numbers.
Despite the reduced rear legroom, the "objective" choice for most people probably revolves around whether they want the XC90's higher seating position, 3rd row seats, child seat, improved ground clearance, or greater towing capacity.
The more subjective reasons, like the interior styling or having the latest sound system, are a matter of preference. I'd get the XC90 just for the improved cupholders. ;>
