Got the lights installed. Messages went right away. Everything went together quite nicely, despite the sub-freezing weather. The only glitches were due to my own ignorance--I spent ten minutes trying to figure out how to pull the bulb out of the holder on the brake light, before realizing I had to PUSH DOWN, then twist, then pull.
I was actually quite impressed with how everything went together. Everything that was user-serviceable was done in a fahsion that made it easy, but at the same time everything went together quite tightly. Next time I have to change a rear bulb, I might have to get my wife to do some of it (her hands are half the size of mine).
I also wanted to note that I am a big fan of my local AutoZone. They were very helpful in picking out the parts, and supporting me in the effort. As I still had daylight, I replaced the "dipped beam" in their parking lot. In the process, I knocked off a rubber cover thing. I explained my problem to the guy behind the counter, and they provided me a tool to fish it out of the engine. Quite nice of them.
