tim,
I had a similar type of collision in my '98 S70. The force from the SUV took out the trunk lid, bumper, L& R fenders, creased the roof and bent the roof rails. All the ancillary parts--lights, energy absorbing structures, moldings, trunk interior trim, muffler & tailpipe, etc.-had to be replaced.
The car had about 28K miles at the time. It took several weeks to repair.
I have been very pleased with the outcome. Although not "perfect" as from the factory, the quality of the repair is very high. The car seem as solid and quiet as before and I have not noticed any difference in the ride or handling characteristics.
Find the best body shop you can. I used J&J Body Shop in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Even though I live in Lansing, MI, the accident occured outside of Strathroy and the Canadian division of my insurer was MUCH more interested in repairing the car than the US office.
So the Canadians got my business and I haven't regretted that decision at all. AFAIK no duct tape was used.
