Have exact same problem (94/855 5 speed). I bought a new boot $65 from brentwood volvo. I cant get shift knob off to replace. Local body guy doesnt want to break it. Volvo dealer wants to hack saw old knob and replace for $85 plus labor. It still remains unfixed.
