I just did this a week ago. Rented a big Proto slide hammer with long jaws: found a really good (probably old) rental yard and talked with the oldest guy there; the slide hammer was his suggestion and it worked like a charm. Used big wire tie wraps to hold jaws around CV cannister. Got the driver's side CV out of the transmission in under 3 minutes!

Don't buy the Volvo special tool for this. I am now thinking of buying a slide hammer 'cause it is good for lots of things.
