Disabling AWD 850 1997

I own a Volvo 850 AWD 1997 GLT Wagon with a 5 speed manual transmission. Can this car be converted to FWD only? If so, do I need to change the transmission, or can I simply remove the driveshaft. Has anyone ever done this?
