First, I recall the '96 models had a connector/crimp defect that could cause some erratic symptoms.
If you do need to replace the ECU, I suggest you consider a salvaged part for maybe $100. See http://www.car-part.com to search the nationwide network.
Installing it is fairly easy. The main electrical connector simply flips open and off. You will need to remove three torx-head screws that hold the ECU to a bracket, and at least one of these screws is difficult to get at around the master cylinder. Small hands and the right tools will help, though.
