AC Recharge help 850

I attempted recharging but the system didnt seem to take the refrigerant.
Actually I think the refrigerant went from my system went into the can instead of the other way around. (it feels heavier) I have the can inverted. Running the car with a/c on. The engine was cycling. Had it running for around 20 minutes. Car still cycling when I gave up.
I checked to make sure valve on car was working. Checked to make sure seal on can was punctured.

I dont know what I'm doing wrong. Could outside temp make a difference... It was somewhat cool out.
