How do I know when Wires are bad? 850

The general concensus is that the plug wires are good for 100,000 miles or more. Unless you have some visible signs of damage/arcing, wait until later to replace. Plugs are good for 30k, per Volvo recommendation, and cap & rotor are probably good for at least 60k, maybe even 100k. In general, Volvo ignition parts are pretty long-lasting.
