gas tank question S60 2003

When my '98 C70's readout showed 5 miles left before empty, I kept on driving just to see how accurate it really was. After the indicated 5 miles, the readout went to "----" and I was able to drive an additional 12 miles on fumes.
I made it to a gas station and filled up with 18.4 gallons.
Needless to say, I won't be doing that again except in an emergency.
