Lots of possible causes. On my car this was once caused by loosened caliper mounting pins/bolts.

Another strange front end sound ended up being caused by worn front bushings and balljoints, which neccesitated replacing the lower A-arm assemblies as at least on my '96 the ball joints are integral with the A-arms.
