Overheating, T-stat/waterpump? 850

The problem I see with pulling over and turning off an overheating car, is that you get heat soak and everything gets even hotter than it was before!

This is my experience in my car (Porsche 944 turbo), which has a temperature gauge that gives an accurate reading. As opposed to the reading in the 850 which I believe sits in the middle for a large range of temperatures.

What is it with Auto manufacturers and putting the waterpump on the timing belt?!?! If the waterpump siezes, its very likely the belt will snap and then at the very least the head is ready for a rebuild.

The cooling fan I imagine is working fine because the car continued to run a bit warm even at highway speeds (55mph). If it was a cooling fan issue the car would have run great at highway speeds and only start to overheat when the car slows down, correct?

I will go ahead and check the oil for coolant and the coolant for oil, but I dont expect to find anything.

Is the thermostat easy to get to and change? Any issues with picking one up from the local autoparts store? What temperature range do I want it to open up at? I imagine this will require draining all the coolant. What coolant do I want to refill with? Is Prestone Dex-cool OK? Should I also change the waterpump just for regular maintenence?
