Why windshield wiper refills? 850

I was told by a decent mechanic that refills do not make as much sense as they once did.

When blades were short, flat, and stiff, refills worked real well, today's wipers are long and supple with many hinges, a new refill often does not work as well as a new blade.

I was surprised to find that I could get Volvo blades for the same price as the new aftermarket teflon models out now.

I am testing two pairs, one of each on two different 850s. So far, the Volvo blades and the teflon ones are working the same.
