I've got my seat all apart. Thanks to you guys and Bay 13!

I'm wondering how the thing actually works (presuming I get back together) and if I need a new cable. Does the mechanism work only by pushing at one end or the other? It seems that only the housing is attached; the cable itself isn't actually attached to anything, it just protrudes a bit into that little hole. I don't see how it could ever pull the seat back the other way. Is there a cable-end piece I'm missing?

ALso, if all I'm doing is shortening the housing 1/4 in, couldn't I do it at either end?
