Last time I looked, CR recommended avoiding the AWD V70 from '98. The FWD doesn't get the ultimate blacklist, but it's probably guilty by association.
Our repair costs have averaged a little over $1000 per year since the warranty expired.
We are frustrated with the maintenance -- we were used to the Japan treatment -- but have kept the car because:
- It's nice to drive when nothing is broken or breaking.
- Continually fixing it is still cheaper than getting something else.
- Leaving aside points 1 and 2, there's really no alternative: there's just no decent, ground-up safe, inexpensive, mid-sized station wagon currently on the market.
