Dealer smoke test for evap leak: a DIY method?

I ONLY do that test WHEN there is a leak and that's not all that common on older (pre-'99 Volvos). The older cars usually have other issues.
The smoke machine is a $2000+ machine that injects smoke through those lines under pressure and you can then see where it's leaking IF there's an actual leak. You can't do that w/o that machine.
