Burning Oil- What Normal? 850 1994

I have no visable oil leak. Nothing on the floor of the garage or on the engine, etc. I must be burning some oil and wonder what is "normal" for a Volvo with 130,000 miles? I generally put in 2 or 3 quarter per each 3,000 mile oil change. I change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles is this too much? How much oil burning is to be expected. My mechanic say a quart every 1000 miles is OK.
