normal brakes for an 850???? 850 1997

I drove my Mom's '97 850 Turbo (78,000 miles) today. When I stopped at a light the car felt like it was still reving high and I had to but a lot of pressure on the brakes. I normally drive a 240 wagon. So, I don't know if this in normal for 850. It felt strange. Is this normal for an 850? If not, what could be causing this and is the car safe to drive? Also, the car had brake pads installed about 1.5 months ago and the rotors turned.
