You don't have to remove the stereo unit to clean the contacts. Just grab the plastic volume knob and pull it off. Get some Radio Shack tuner cleaner and spray into the opening. Turn the shaft a few times and spray some more into the shaft then replace the plastic volume knob. It'll last you another 100k miles.
