You are correct. Volvo's are not in the same reliability class as Toyota and Honda.

If you buy an older 850, for example, you may incure the liability of the A/C evaporator ($1500), the rear main seal ($1000), the PNP switch ($250+), the ABS ECU ($x00), etc, and perhaps dozens of smaller items, many of which can be handled by a good DIY'er.

The advantage of Volvo over the others is that it is usually very repairable and can be kept running fine for well over 150k miles. The engine itself has proven very reliable, and the integrity of the car body, braking system, and safety features are unmatched by Japanese imports.

I recommend you select one very carefully, perhaps having a Volvo mechanic do a check, ask questions about the A/C, the oil seal, etc. You may end up with a good bargain over the course of several years vs. choosing a Toyota.
