lots of help on this problem in the RWD forum, specially the 700/900 FAQ's. This forum is for the FWD volvos.

Presently I am going thru the same dilemma, my speedo needle stopped working but the odometer is fine, and the only way to fix this problem is to replace the speedo/odometer gauge. Do you want to swap gauges?
