Chris:

Later 850s with climate control have the same "light on = A/C off" setup. When the REC and A/C lights blink, it means your system is generating a trouble code (at least that's what happened to me a couple of summers ago, the cause of which was a faulty blend door).

Now, you need to find someone with an OBDII reader.
